I started today biking to class and ended the day at the top of a wind turbine. Yes, you read that right. Today marks the second day of core course week here at DIS and we have already had a jam-packed schedule. Yesterday my core course, Sustainable Development in Northern Europe, rode our bikes to Amager (a nature reserve located in Copenhagen) to discuss biodiversity and we ended the day with our teacher stating that she had a surprise in store for tomorrow.
After having a fascinating discussion about energy policy in Denmark, my core course and I biked over to Refshaleøen to see a co-op of citizen installed wind turbines. I have never seen a wind turbine up close and personal and let me tell you it was HUGE. Later, our guide told us a little about himself and how he got involved in wind turbines. I thought this was all we were going to do here but BOY was I wrong. My core course teacher, Silvia, commenced to inform us we were, in fact, going to climb up the wind turbines ourselves. WHAT???!

After hearing the news, I was immediately filled with both excitement and nerves. I usually don’t have a fear of heights but standing at the base of the wind turbine and looking up was VERY daunting. I had little time to worry, though, and quickly bundled up to begin my journey.

While the journey to the top was long and a bit tedious, I eventually made it, and WOAH the view was insane. At the top, it was crazy windy and rainy but I couldn’t have been happier. I was completely geeking out at how I was actually standing on top of a wind turbine (which is a sentence I NEVER thought I would be able to say).
Once everyone was back down from the top, we all collectively freaked out at what just happened and how lucky we were to have gotten to experience that. My dad messaged me later that evening asking if anything interesting happened today, and let me tell you, I sure had A LOT to tell him. Today is only Tuesday which means I still have three more days left of core course week and I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am for the rest of the week.
